my 'art' class part deux

continuing on from yesterdays post ~ I forgot to tell you this: I think I am going to be the 'problem' child in this art class. I am sure I already exasperate the teacher. In two short hours !
First of all, I had all the 'wrong' things - I had an old table cloth to protect the table instead of the obligatory bath towel.
I had all my art 'stuff' in an old whicker basket instead of the plastic crate that every one else had.
I wanted a blue background but didn't have the correct blue, so she suggested I mix some of my gesso (which I bought because I liked the name - gesso - sounds very arty, me thinks) - so I started mixing, dolloping and dolloping gesso onto my plastic icecream lid (other ladies use a porcelain plate covered in gladwrap so that they can use it again) & I got some cobalt blue and happily mixed away, it was looking very much like fondant by this time - she looked at it and said ' my, you have certainly mixed alot of blue' - and yep! I had enough to paint the opera house - twice !!!
the other students suggested that I save it in a plastic container so I could use it again, they were even kind enough to give me a plastic jar, so I did what they suggested and promptly through it in the bin when I got home. I mean, how much blue paint does one need?
I have noticed that my blue background is showing signs of not being 'perfect', there are white marks where I missed. My teacher told me, that I may have to give it two coats but
1. I don't want it to be a plain blue canvas - I want to put other colours as well
and
2. I don't have any blue paint because it is in the bin!
I think that both Colette & Shell should fly quickly down here & show my teacher how they did their art. She doesn't know how Colette got all the colours on her backgroun and she is baffled over what techniques Shell has used
Oh ! and my teacher also teaches a childs class on Thursday after school & while I was painting my blue background, I asked if I could change to that class - they all looked at me like I was off the planet! but - the kids class does papier mache, finger painting, splatter painting and they make fun stuff - my inner child's dream!
don't get me wrong, my teacher is a nice lady and helpful but I am beyond her wildest nightmares.
outside the box, ladies, out side the box

Oh you are going to have soooo much fun in your art class. Hope you blow your teacher away....teehee!!!Robyn I've done the same kinds of things in art classes....everyone neat and tidy...while I get wild colors on my clothes and on my face!

This is why I love you....make her earn her money...LOL
You know what I think Robyn?
...just because she teaches art..doesn't make her an artist..!
You will have taught her a few things before this is all over.

Outside the box is WONDERFUL, dear heart! Keep thinking outside the box - maybe the students will learn a few things from you! xo

I am laughing ! That is so funny! i can just see that classroom and teacher! Gesso is great! Gesso is more for Priming canvas or paper. It gives the surface some "tooth" so the paint will be easier to apply or give more oomph! I love my Gesso! And Gel matte medium! ----WAY to shake up that Class, girl!

You're the great student, you're teaching the teachers! It shows you how hard it is for people to think out of the box, isn't it? That's crazy! Good for you for doing it your way. It's starting to feel that you're paying just to be there though, I think you should be getting paid for teaching them!

You crack me up Ms*R. I think you should be able to have your backgound any way you want! Can't wait to see it! xo

I agree, just because she teaches art, doesn't make her an artist.
Be patient, see what she has to offer, and take from the class whatever works for you.
I teach art sometimes and many students seem to want a "recipe"...so she may be used to that. You are going to have fun anyway!

LoL! Love this, Robyn :) Outside the box is the best place to be, I think, and your background should be as you like it. I still haven't got round to getting any gesso, but will have to soon, I'm sure! My favourite is Gel Medium at the minute, although I haven't played much at all lately.. need a class to go to! ;)
I'm sure the class you go to will learn more from you than the other way round, and I, too, would want to go & join in with the children!
Enjoy! :)
Hugs, Suze xXx

There is NO wrong way or right way for creating art. That is why the word "create" is used. This is something your art "teacher" should know. If she seems like you are not "complying" with what her "way" is.... then she obviously is limited in her skills and too sour to try anything new. When anyone asks me what art I specialise in as an artist.... I cannot answer as I would take up too much of their time with my list of accomplishments. You only live once after all. You do whatever your heart desires and take knowledge from wherever and whomever inspires you. You are doing a brilliantly, wonderful thing for your soul. xox Nicole

Very odd for a class that's called mixed media. But also very funny! You made me laugh out loud. I think the teaching is going to go both ways. You can tell the teacher that I squeezed some paint on and scraped it across the canvas with a credit card... and then duck!!!!

Oh god, that is soooo funny!!! I love how you threw your paint in the bin - at an art class I did two years ago there were older women who *hated* any kind of waste - of course, I on the other hand am quite willing to mix a colour, then decide that I don't really want to use it, and dump it. I mean, I'm not excessively wasteful, but these women were almost giving me lectures - if they had too much poo brown, they'd have to use it - *all* of it. Wierd.

Yes, keep going doing your thing outside of the box!!! I think your teacher needs to be taught that art is about 'play' - I'd wanna join the kids too.
