"There's such a lot of different Annes in me. I sometimes think that is why I'm such a troublesome person. If I was just the one Anne it would be ever so much more comfortable, but then it wouldn't be half so interesting."

the month of Mary

on the catholic calendar, May is supposedly the month of Mary. And even though I don't consider myself a 'christian' in the real term - I do have a strong devotion to Mary..... gee, I don't really know what I am in terms of religion - I was baptised a Church of England, did one year with the seventh day adventists when I was 12. Confirmed into the catholic church at the age of 33 - tried buddhism and many other ways of 'believing' - have been a 'witch' all my life without knowing it....

as usual, I get off the subject - during May, I like to honour Mary - with roses - a bunch picked from my garden in front of one of my vintage statues....

this month I also hope to build a shrine outside in my garden - much like the one in Under the Tuscan sun. a place where I can go and put flowers whenever I need some extra *help*.

and did you know that lady beetles/bugs are really 'our lady's bugs'? tis true!

"In the olden days, British farmers prayed to the Virgin Mary for help with their crops. Then ladybugs arrived and helped the farmers by eating crop-eating bugs and saved farmers' crops. In honor of these bugs, the farmers called the beetles "Our Lady's beetle," which turned into ladybug."

I learn something new almost everytime I visit your blog. Was sleeping with the baby monitor on when Diva woke me up. Just knew she was in labor so rush out in my pj's only to find she has gas! Her burping and passing gas would make a redneck man proud. I sat with her for awhile and rubbed her belly. She is now sleeping and I am wide awake. I sure hope your godchildren hurry and arrive soon so I can destress!

I never knew the origin of "ladybugs," but they are one of the few insects I like. The photo of your roses and statue is beautiful. I like the idea of your outdoors shrine. xo

An outdoor shrine would be lovely in your garden Robyn.
I feel we can believe in a higher power without needing to categorize it or put a name to it.

I used to consider them lucky, until a few years ago we had an infestation of them (orange-colored ones, not the usual red) in our city. They were everywhere, swarming, and I even watched them crawling up the side of a building from the 15th floor!

I like the idea of a garden shrine, tho'

Your photo of your vintage statue is beautiful, and the idea of an outside shrine sounds lovely.

I love ladybugs, but didn't know the origin of their name. Thanks! XOXO

When I was little we lived next door to the Catholic Church. Each May they did a sort of May Day/Mary celebration with flowers and things. They brought in a new statue for outside that was in the crate waiting to be erected. As wee kids we came upon the crate and peered inside...we thought it was a "body" and ran frightened. Later when the statue was up and she had a wreath of flowers placed about her head I thought it the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. I do not consider myself religious but Mary is a VERY important Mother to all.(religious or not). One day I will get out my mom's Mary statues from storage and place in honor of her. An outdoor shrine would be lovely!
XOXO

Hmmmm and the Catholic Church is the only Christian religon that recognises a female deity. And lady bugs huh? Never knew that! I LOVE ladybirds, probably for their beautiful colouring and gentle nature.
Bright blessings,

I think all religion base doesn't matter on the flavor you worship in.
It how you treat your fellow human that what counts.

I personly lean toward the earthy base religion.

The Blessed Mother is very special and she has helped me on so many occasions when she was all I had to turn too ( rough pregnancies and other things) I could just feel her motherly love and protection over me...I put a statue of her in my garden 12 years ago in front of a tiny white lilac bush and it has grown up around her making a natural grotto. I think an outdoor shrine would be lovely for you.

Robyn....A long time ago I learned that labels limit us....So by You not labeling yourself as Christian/Buddahist/ or whatever you are more open to all that is out there. That greatly enriches your life.
Sending love

Did you know Robyn, that there are places that raise Ladybugs, and you can buy them by the hundreds to help your garden or your crops. I'm not sure, but I think they eat aphids. Did you get my email with the picture of the honeybee hive in the park? I thought that was pretty amazing the day after the honeybee prayer went out to the universe.

Hello Robyn, I've missed you!! It's lovely to catch up on your blog again :o)
Sounds like we're in a similar place spirit-wise - and I've just bought Under the Tuscan Sun on dvd - am still waiting for a quiet couple of hours when I can enjoy it on my own :o)
Mary - without a doubt - is the Mother of us all - and the divine feminine too many in the Protestant Church have tried to suppress!! But I won't get started on that!! Once a theologian, always a theologian, I'm afraid!! xoxox

Sounds like you have got your bases covered! I like the Mary icon, she has always appealed to me too.
The lady bugs are special and always have been, I guess their name befits them!
BTW, you could teach an altar class, how to set one up and what to include.
